Marketing Basics:   

Here are the basics for even the most grassroots oriented businesses:

Things to have:

  1. Good name, easy to spell and remember
  2. Good logo, easily recognizable, that may elicit questions & maybe a saying/phrase
  3. Business card, labels, small flyers, or other simple easy object sto create, memorable but not unwieldy
  4. Other promotional objects: T-shirts or bumper stickers. You don’t have to do quantity!
  5. Web site, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media presence, like Meetup!
  6. Reviews and presence online.
  7. Know how to write a press release for a) Newspapers, television b) Newswire, online

Important Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. What is my product/service?
  2. Who is my audience/client/customer?
  3. What age are they?
  4. What media do they use?
  5. How can I reach them?

Important to Gather On a Regular Basis:

  1. Emails, phone numbers, contact information
  2. Think of ways to target new groups outside of your typical market.
  3. What do your clients want or need?
  4. Think about occasional freebies.

The most effective marketing methods:

  1. Classes
  2. Speeches
  3. Email newsletters or blogs
  4. Local television and radio
  5. Local events

Things to remember to Do

  1. Be connected: Twitter, WordPress, Facebook, Vine, Pinterest, Tumblr, Snapchat, Meetup, etc.
  2. Give good “customer service”.
  3. Write thank yous.
  4. Do follow up.
  5. Give something free once in a while, either a clip from your book, or a reading from it, or a free copy to a librarian or bookstore clear or manager.
  6. Tag everything related to your product.
